Tim was made a life peer in 1998 and until July 2004 was the Liberal Democrat Health Spokesman and thereafter until 2010 Liberal Democrat Spokesman on Culture, Media and Sport, in the House of Lords. He is a member of The Communications Select Committee.
He is Deputy Chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on China and Vice Chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Groups on Turkey, the UAE, Ovarian Cancer, the Iraqi-Kurdistan Region and Intellectual Property.
He introduced and ensured the passage through the House of Lords of the 2003 Tobacco Advertising and Sponsorship Act and the Live Music Act 2012.
He has been the Chair of Lib Dems in Communications since 2012.
He is President of Ambitious About Autism (formerly Treehouse) the national autism education charity and a Council Member of University College London
